_"History
cannot give us a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller
understanding of ourselves, and of our common humanity, so that we can
better face the future."

Michael Lieberman's Philosophy of Education:
_
Knowledge is one of the most
genuine, authentic, and valued things that an individual can possess. With
knowledge, we make well-informed, practical decisions. Without it, ignorance
prevails. Because of this, I feel as though there is no career more important
than one which imparts knowledge and instills values into the minds of our adolescents,
ultimately providing the essential tools necessary for future generations to be
educated citizens of the world.
Teachers, alongside parents, are at the forefront of molding knowledgeable students in order to ensure they go on to lead successful lives. In order to make certain that every student possesses a solid educational foundation, I believe that the curriculum should include the more traditional subject matter, such as social studies, math, science, and English. Although elective courses are important, I believe they should be implemented and instructed in a way that enhances the material taught in the core curriculum. My views are consistent with E. D. Hirsch, Jr., who values the importance of a common body of knowledge being taught across the country, providing an equal, yet strong foundation for our students.
Of the aforementioned content areas, I strongly I believe that social studies is of paramount importance, and a vital subject that must be taught to all students. I also believe that it is the teacher’s job to facilitate instruction using a variety of appropriate methods in order to best convey the ideas and values provided by history. In my classroom, the use of technology will be instrumental in the teaching of social studies; technology is a wonderful thing, and I believe it should be embraced by educators in order to construct a learning environment that is both fun and thought provoking.
While I understand the importance of standardized testing, I believe the best way to prepare students for their assessment is through hands-on, collaborative teaching styles which promotes student engagement with the content. Interacting with the material is so valuable and important, and as a teacher, I will ensure that my students engage with the major themes, eras, and turning points which a comprehensive social studies curriculum provides. Also, in order to be the best educator I can be, I will constantly reflect on my teaching style and methods in order to ensure my students receive a superior education, whilst providing an environment in which my students feel safe and secure.
